Samuel C. Williams, At War With Yourself
Sometimes a straightforward narrative is best. Williams’ At War With Yourself, published by the U.K. imprint Singing Dragon, is a slim, thirty-page comic. Inside, Williams recounts his conversations with a British veteran suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder after his return from a military tour in Sierra Leone. Williams is very clear about his intention in producing the comic. “I’ve always wanted to understand more about his experiences,” Matt writes in an early panel, “...and I was sure there was a way to help others in his situation.”
Williams describes the evolution of his friendship with Matt, which begins at pick-up at the nursery school where both men’s daughters attend. The two connect when they talk about their mental health struggles (the author suffers from depression and anxiety).
