Regina Hofer, Fat
Reminiscent of potato prints and the work of the Expressionist George Rouault, Regina Hofer’s Fat utilizes the empty space created by her spare illustrations, casting her artwork’s emphatic concern with excess and absence in high relief. Her bold and schematic artwork provides the emotional engine of this story. Fat imaginatively recounts the author’s struggles with anorexia and bulimia. Hofer, who was born in Austria, takes us through her early childhood years to early adulthood, where sexual harassment and family problems rekindle her eating disorder.
