Caregiving

Taking turns : stories from HIV/AIDS care Unit 371

Taking Turns presents just such a bridge in comics form, lovingly rendering the intensity and awe of caregiving.  Czerwiec’s graphic narrative investigates what happens when the scaffolding of hospice care forms a lasting “sense of community, or purpose, of home.” For Czerwiec, hospice eclipses the less consequential pulls of the day-to-day outside its confines, where, as she writes, she is starting to feel “out of place.”  As another unit staff member describes to her later on in the book, the hospital became a kind of place where even though there was “death everywhere, in unit 371 there was life. Abundant life.”
