Bridges
Czerwiec’s illustrations capture the indescribable gulf between this place, and, as Czerwiec calls it on the following page, “the rest of life.” We witness her wrestling with her need as a visual artist to reconcile the contrast. At home, she constructs a painted wooden panel that she conceives as a “bridge” to help her cross from one space to the other and make sense of both contexts.
In other instances, Czerwiec's artwork effectively communicates the science of HIV - emerging as she lives it, in the hospital - in a visual language that demystifies.
