Sometimes, Green’s line compositions take more literal forms. In one double-page panel dominated by white space, the only object shown is a tiny black box with a key, with roots composed of the same snarled lines pressing out of the box.  We understand as readers that inside the black box are the seeds of Katie’s internal struggle.  The twisted and ragged roots of Katie’s secret have outgrown the box – the manifestation of her silence and shame.
