Stories of the body
Anatomical Triangles of the Neck articulates an explicit connection between desire and its anatomical referents. Part visual meditation, part lyric, Willberg combines anatomical illustrations of the neck and the head with story. In a series of drawings, she represents the anatomical triangles of muscle at the back of the neck. Each muscle is labeled with letters that then become characters in a romantic scene. Points A, B, and C of the submental triangle, for example, are animated in the scene of seduction that she narrates in her captions:
“(A)my, watches helplessly as (B)ill picks (C)arol off the ground and dusts off her skirt, his hand lingering on her thigh.”
As Willberg explains,
"The human body is full of anatomical triangles. Arteries and nerves are often located within these triangles’ borders. Hence, anatomical triangles can tell a surgeon where to cut or where not to cut. The neck has many triangles. Lovers have necks, therefore lovers have triangles. Hence, the lover’s triangle can tell us a lot, too."
