Lindsay plays with simple line drawings to reinforce the complexities of bipolar disorder.  In one, she sits in front of the mirror, staring at a reflected form that is composed of a mass of curled lines. In another, the same cluster of lines sits looking at a reflection of Lindsay, smiling.

In both, we are meant to understand that believing in appearances can be misleading. “In a lot of ways, sanity is a performance,” she observes, later in the book, as she tap-dances in front of a group of psychiatrists.
