Tangles : a story about Alzheimer's, my mother, and me

The book is organized into three parts. Composed of vignettes like “Hair,” “Long Distance,” and “Trouble Understanding,” these narratives are occasionally interrupted by single-panel drawings.  In a vignette entitled “Gaps,” she describes learning to write left-handed over a period where she cared for her mother so that she can “strengthen her brain;” the effect is to suggest that the author herself is hoping to exert control over her brain's processes so as to avoid what’s happened to Midge.

“Taste and Smell” roots us in the day-to-day of Midge’s life and the brutal ways Alzheimer’s robs Sarah’s mother of her cognitive abilities and independence.
