Dr. David Cho

Dr. Cho, born in 1936, founded Yoido in 1958. Dr. Cho was born a Buddhist but converted to Christianity at 17 after being healed from tuberculosis, attributing that to God. He attended Seoul's Full Gospel Seminary under the AG assembly; the denomination was running a tent church on the city's hillside, which marked the beginning of Yoido. Dr. Cho served at this tent Church post-Korean War, and many displaced people were struggling with food insecurity, illness, and homelessness, leading them to this Tent. Cho was known for his faith healing, which drew many people to this Tent; as the Yoido grew, it eventually became the largest Pentecostal Church having upwards of a million members.
