The Devil Trying to Tempt Christ 

Wales England, 1770 

This printed and hand painted image of Christ being tempted by the Devil, shows Jesus sitting on a rock in the wilderness  wearing purple and white robes and a nude figure with a tail and wings standing infront of him. Jesus is to the right with a look of resistance, but also confusion with the way his hands look to almost stretch out towards the figure opposite tohim. The nude figure to the left is the devil trying to tempt Jesus into breaking his fast, he holds two loaves of bread in his hands, his teal trails behind him in a sneaky way to try and hide from Christ, but it's still obvious to the viewer. Jesus was fasting for 40 days after being baptised and while having this encounter he was able to resist the devilDuring this time in England there was a heavy influence of French art and and a growing interest in artist from Wales and their spedif artistic styles, they valued showing landscapes, the environment, their country styled homes, and the use of color at the time.This version of “The Devil Trying to Tempt Christ" represents the corresponding prayer being said and displays the characteristics of Wales artist and prayer book decoration at the time. Although it was not very common this prayer book was written in Welsh, representing both the interior and exterior Welsh pride and artistry.

The Devil Trying to Tempt Christ 

France, 1717

This printed image of Christ being tempted by the Devil, shows Jesus sitting under a tree, he had heavy ropes on and he has a halo around his head to show that he is in fact christ. Opposite of Christ is the Devil wearing a robe with an array of necklaces and rope attcked to objects wrapped around his waist. The Devil's face looks like a monster and at the top of his head he has a horn growing out of his head. The Devil is stretching out a piece of bread to Jesus and Jesus looks as if he is thinking about taking the bread. This image is showing the Devil’s attempt and fail at tempting Jesus inot breaking his 40 day fast.During this time the French had an interest in taking inspiration from the past, nature, creating and showing the supernatural in their art. This image represents the French intrest at the time with the detailing of the wilderness that surrounds Jesus and the Devil, there is no color, but you can see the deatling in the different textures of each plant, tree, and rock. As well as the monstrous look the Devil has in this image, in this image he looks as if he has horns going out of his head.
