The Resurrection

Missale Roamnum, "The Resurrection"

The Resurrection

This Latin prayerbook included very few images in the interior, but one of the few biblical stories depicted was The Resurrection. At the top of the image you see Jesus rising from the dead, and on land at the bottom of the page there are Roman soilders who are cowering away. By covering their eyes and ears, they express shock from the power His presence exudes.

This printed and hand painted image of Jesus resurrecting from the dead shows his followers mourning his loss and then being surpised when he was raised from the dead. On the btoom left side of the image there are three figures; one is crying and two looked surpsried to see Jesus after seeing him die on a cross, the last figure on the ground to the right also looks like they are crying. At the top of the image, you see Jesus raised from the dead surrounded by two angles. The angels have large white wings and are wearing pink robes. During this time in England, there was a heavy influence of French art and a growing interest in artists from Wales and their unique artistic styles. Typically in Welsh art, there was an emphasis on showing landscapes, the environment, and their rustic-styled homes. This interest in the environment can especially be seen in the clouds, which reflects the type of climate often seen in Wales. They also developed a very specific use of color at the time, often implementing certain colors as symbolism. This version of “The Resurrection '' represents the corresponding prayer being said and displays the characteristics of Welsh art and prayer book decoration at the time.
