Sexualization in Batman

In these images, where Batman is giving CPR to an unresponsive woman, the differences between the depiction of masculine and feminine beings are especially apparent. This especially extends to the portrayal of the woman and the way she is depicted despite being unconscious. In each panel where she is shown, the woman is lying back in what can be described as a sensual manner. With her arms thrown back and legs facing up, the artist draws attention to these aspects of her body. Attention is also drawn to her breasts, which are illustrated in a way that makes them apparent no matter the position she is in.

The way she is dressed also contributes to this. Her hair is splayed out around her, and her dress, which has thin straps and presumably slips up the sides which allow her legs to stick out the way they do, adds to the image of sensuality she reflects despite her unconscious state.

These aspects set her apart from Superman and Batman who are also in the scene. The two of them are fully clothed with no skin showing except their faces which is in contrast to her revealing outfit and poses. They are both drawn to be large with defined muscles and their bodies are squared out in a way that highlights these things.

When considering the portrayal of unconscious, passive sensuality in the woman contrasted with the men’s large and defined figures while also considering their active role in the story, the disparities between representations of each gender are apparent.
