Sappo Comics

Sappo Comics

Sappo started as a daily common man comic depicting the struggles and frustrations of a commuter named John Sappo while catching the 5:15 train. Written by E,C. Seger starting in 1920 and originally named the The Five-Fifteen before changing to Sappo, it also changed to a more domestic comic in 1921. After the comic gained popularity and expanded to more of a general slice of life comic the character Myrtle, named after the author's real life wife, was introduced. She is considered over bearing and a foil to her smaller husband. In this strip, his 'dominating' wife floats away begging for help as he rejoices in her unfortunate gravity issues whilst exploring a different planet. This is a common theme within the strip during its 20 year run, with the poking at marital issues, nagging women tropes, and leads into the more intimidating toxicity from Popeyes comics later.
