Susan Warner (1819-1885) was born in New York City and initially published under the pen-name Elizabeth Wetherell. She is best known for her bestseller The Wide, Wide World. As Sharon Kim tells us, her novel was "[cried] over by Jo March and loved by Vincent Van Gogh, praised by critics, pirated by printers, and read by hundreds of thousands all over the United States and Europe.
