The name \"German\" was originally applied to the cologne in 1870. This name was chosen just to give a definite title to the cologne; it was not actually from Germany. The cologne initially was only sold in $1.00 bottles, with sample vials filled with cologne freely distributed to create an increased demand. By 1877, the production of the German Cologne became so great that Hoyt sold the apothecary shop to two then employees, Crowell and Harrison.\r\n\tThe original $1.00 bottle limited distribution since it was more cologne than most people needed (or wanted). Shedd designed a distinctive round bottle with the indented panel for use with the cologne and provided both the $1.00 and a new 25¢ trial-size bottle. This trial-sized bottle proved to be a huge success and business expanded quickly. The date when the trial-sized bottle was introduced is estimated to be in the early 1870's, since a medium-sized (50¢) bottle was introduced in 1876.\r\n\tThe bottle could have been purchased and used from the 1880’s until around 1918 when the company’s name changed to “Eau de Cologne” because of World War I. It could have been shipped to New Jersey and used around the area of its discovery. \r\n"]]]]]],["elementSet",{"elementSetId":"5"},["name","IIIF Item Metadata"],["description"],["elementContainer",["element",{"elementId":"65"},["name","UUID"],["description"],["elementTextContainer",["elementText",{"elementTextId":"2664"},["text","340f11c8-3540-4c11-968f-a65d9b4ee02d"]]]]]]]],["item",{"itemId":"550","public":"1","featured":"0"},["fileContainer",["file",{"fileId":"1814","order":"1"},["src","https://omeka.drew.edu/files/original/519fe6f20d500f7ff103e61659564baa.jpeg"],["authentication","8da00a1f597cf86c9302c818a1c6053f"]],["file",{"fileId":"1796","order":"2"},["src","https://omeka.drew.edu/files/original/f98e9d69ac12d30b116079fcfe2dfe58.JPG"],["authentication","70b856efe78184cf4da1a496ad1aecca"]],["file",{"fileId":"1815","order":"3"},["src","https://omeka.drew.edu/files/original/ade73351133ec97cbe8ee15fedd7de38.JPG"],["authentication","f7d3f62bc418e1bc85dd5ca6bebdb634"]],["file",{"fileId":"1794","order":"4"},["src","https://omeka.drew.edu/files/original/5e861d5cd95ec8948518b02a92060b6f.JPG"],["authentication","c2b6449dd22d53361db9f8cd85f17701"]],["file",{"fileId":"1793","order":"5"},["src","https://omeka.drew.edu/files/original/2a9d2dcc8f68d549b860de752e8d66b9.JPG"],["authentication","dec9576d8c3ea0727b677ed39f04b573"]],["file",{"fileId":"1768","order":"6"},["src","https://omeka.drew.edu/files/original/39c255106637b13b044991fd1b11a0dc.JPG"],["authentication","c8855c6e958a958db4a831f46c90f241"]],["file",{"fileId":"1795","order":"7"},["src","https://omeka.drew.edu/files/original/9d20023bc48e995250139d0bde421fbf.JPG"],["authentication","5a87b71d74a5702d5f6545e1f556af86"]],["file",{"fileId":"1767","order":"8"},["src","https://omeka.drew.edu/files/original/3bbdf669411b0636eb4cdf53fa7d67d0.JPG"],["authentication","8d3a9a2d9353661864cd0d987bf2dfdb"]],["file",{"fileId":"1792","order":"9"},["src","https://omeka.drew.edu/files/original/1b274db8527ca5afae9b0206f283252c.JPG"],["authentication","212ef5883e5a473071425eae9a9513ef"]]],["collection",{"collectionId":"30"},["elementSetContainer",["elementSet",{"elementSetId":"1"},["name","Dublin Core"],["description","The Dublin Core metadata element set is common to all Omeka records, including items, files, and collections.
